shades of gray

wild splashes of gray, silver and smoke are
distributed and dispatch for flamboyant effect,
another colorless demonstration,
the unremitting lack of color is vital
to the composition’s success,
i don't mean colorless as in dull or boring,
i mean without color, but very, very significant,
extraordinary, relevant to the moment we’re in

to be black or white is a dangerous setting,
they are the dominant tones that are presented here

surveying, witty observations, surprises, smart and
engaging, as only a person in the process of exploring
untested possibilities can be

you feel open, special, chaotic,
dizzy, slightly dodgy but delightful,
it is like playing in a pile of leaves

it is emblematic, rolling a pair of parallel questions
down a slight hill in an autumnal forest,
the representation tumbles and tosses as limbs,
body parts and dry leaves are jarringly glimpsed

oddly, it seems like a sober scrap of
literary narrative, something dramatic is happening
to a man represented in a motion picture show
but you don’t know what it is,
and you don’t want to know what it is,
it is just what he’s going through,
and it seems painful to you
